Ruth Bader Ginsburg Will Honor Constitution Day on Campus

Supreme Court Justice to speak at Lisner Auditorium for Constitution Day celebration on Sept. 12.

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg will participate in a conversation with historian Maeva Marcus, a GW law professor and director of the Institute for Consitutional History, as part of the Sixth Annual Capital City Constitution Day celebration on Sept. 12 at 1 p.m. The event will be held at Lisner Auditorium.?

The Constitutional Sources Project (ConSource), The Institute for Constitutional History at the New-York Historical Society and the George Washington University Law School will sponsor the event, which is open to the GW community. Tickets are free on a first-come, first-serve basis and will be available?online?beginning Sept. 2 at noon.

“We are very eager to welcome Justice Ginsburg to GW. We are excited to be working with ConSource to offer this celebration of Constitution Day,” said Christopher A. Bracey, senior associate dean of academic affairs at the Law School. “The event allows our students to hear directly from a seasoned Supreme Court justice—an experience unlike any other.”

Justice Ginsburg is the latest Supreme Court judge to visit campus. Justice Sonia Sotomayor joined the Law School earlier this year to judge the 2014 Van Vleck Constitutional Law Moot Court Competition and to inaugurate the newly renovated Jacob Burns Legal Clinics. Last year, Justice Antonin Scalia participated in the Fifth Annual Capital City Constitution Day celebration co-sponsored by ConSource and GW Law. During his keynote address, he shared his views on the enduring nature of the U.S. Constitution with the university community.

“For each of the last six years, ConSource has hosted the Capital City Constitution Day celebration to mark the anniversary of the signing of the United States Constitution. We are thrilled to partner with GW Law and the Institute for Constitutional History at the New-York Historical Society to host this year's program with Justice Ginsburg,” said ConSource Executive Director Julie Silverbrook, B.A. ‘09.
