University Resources for
Hurricane Sandy
As the Northeast region continues to recover from
Hurricane Sandy, our hearts go out to the communities and families affected. The
George Washington University stands ready to assist those students in
need.
University Counseling Center
(UCC)
Over the next few weeks, students may experience a
number of reactions in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. Having a reaction is
both normal and expected. Sometimes emotional aftershocks (or stress reactions)
appear immediately, or they may appear in a few hours or during the next several
days.
Mental health professionals are always available to
speak to GW students and consult with faculty, staff, or parents about any
mental health-related concerns. The University Counseling Center is available by
phone 24 hours a day, seven days a week at 202-994-5300.
There is no fee for any initial conversation with
UCC, including the initial intake assessment and the 24/7 hotline. After
utilizing the six no-cost sessions students have the option of requesting
reduced fees for additional ongoing counseling services if they face financial
hardship. For those enrolled in GW’s Student Health Insurance Plan through Aetna
all additional sessions are free of charge. For others, many health insurance
plans reimburse students for UCC fees.
Additional resources are available on the UCC website.
CARE Network
Students, faculty, staff, parents, and other
university constituents can reach the Division of Student Affairs if they are
concerned about a student. Members of the CARE Network across campus provide
support to those students brought to our attention. For more information, or to
file a report, please visit GW's CARE
Network page.
Academic Assistance
If you face any academic difficulty, talk with your
professors for extensions or incompletes and work with your Academic Advisor for
documentation and support. Professors received guidance from Provost Lerman
regarding accommodations for time extensions for those without power.
Colonial Crossroads
Seek out the Center for Student Engagement staff in
your residence halls for support and to access additional university resources.
Look for more information from the Center for Civic Engagement and Public
Service on how you can help serve those most in need in the coming
week.
Sincerely, Peter Konwerski Senior Associate
Provost and Dean of Student Affairs
