Through 10 classes on Saturdays during this period you will learn the fundamentals of Beijing Opera performing style. At the end of the class, selected participants will be invited to perform on the stage of the DCBBO Annual Beijing Opera Gala to be held at Montgomery College Cultural Arts Center on June 25, 2017. Beijing Opera is more than just music; it is a synthesis of song, speech, dance-acting, mime, martial arts, and colorful costumes and complex makeup. DCBBO aims to promote cultural diversity in the US East, in particular the Greater Washington DC metropolitan area through educational oriented performances and workshops about Beijing Opera. DCBBO is proud of her contribution to public awareness and appreciation of Beijing Opera, an intangible cultural heritage of humanity registered by UNESCO in 2010. Her footprint was found in numerous cultural events at schools, universities, local communities and government offices since its establishment. Through our effort, about 3,000 people were exposed to the beauty of this traditional art form for the first time. These events were highly remarked by the public and received wide media coverage. The most recent examples include: 1) Beijing Opera Gala 2016 at Montgomery College Cultural Arts Center; 2) Beijing Opera workshops at George Mason University, Parkland Magnet Middle School, Oyster-Adam Bilingual School, and Baltimore and Northern Virginia Chinese schools; 3) Beijing Opera demos at the 10th Asian American Community Festival, the Gaithersburg High School, the US Department of Transportation, the Sunrise Senior Living at Montgomery Village, and the 6th Annual City of Rockville Lunar New Year Celebration; and 4) a special Back-to-Home Performance Tour in China to bridge the communication between US and Chinese fans of Beijing Opera.
