[GW InfoMail] TECHNOLOGY UPDATE: GW E-mail Phishing Scam Warning

GW Logo

WARNING: An e-mail phishing scam is currently circulating GW e-mail addresses disguised as official correspondence from the George Washington University. The e-mails, which have a variety of subject lines such as "Alert" or "Banner System Activation," ask users to provide their NetIDs and passwords to activate their affiliation with IT services. The e-mails may be sent from compromised GW accounts that belong to users who have already provided their NetIDs and passwords to attackers. If you have received such an e-mail, please do NOT respond or fill out the form.

This is a reminder that you should NEVER reply to e-mail messages asking for personal information, even if it looks legitimate or appears to be security-related. The university and Division of IT will NEVER send you an e-mail asking you to reply with personal information such as your password, birth date, Social Security number or GWid. Additionally, please ensure that your computer is patched with the most recent operating system updates.

Please note that the university is currently circulating a "Secure Your NetID" message to GW students, faculty and staff. If you have not yet claimed your NetID you may receive a message referring you to http://identity.gwu.edu to claim your account. This message is a legitimate university-sponsored notification and should not be dismissed as SPAM; however, if you have any doubts as to the authenticity of a message please contact the IT Support Center at the number provided below.

If you have already responded to a phishing e-mail, have any questions or concerns or want to validate the source of a message, please contact the Division of Information Technology at 202-994-GWIT (4948), ithelp@gwu.edu or http://ITsupport.gwu.edu. Technology assistance is available through the IT Support Center 24 hours a day.
