INDIANAPOLIS   New Panthers coach Ron Rivera seemed to confirm that Carolina QB Jimmy Clausen, the team's second round pick in 2010,Brandon Marshall Jersey, is hardly secure as the team's long term answer under center.
"We're exploring all positions, and quarterback is one of them," Rivera said at the scouting combine Thursday.
"Teams that have those guys and attack you vertically are tough," he added, noting how much easier Chargers QB Philip Rivers made his job as San Diego's defensive coordinator in recent years.
Rivera compared Auburn's Cam Newton to Joe Flacco and Ben Roethlisberger while noting "he might be a better athlete than all of them."
Still, coming off a 2 14 year, Carolina has numerous needs.
"We evaluated our own roster first and foremost," said Rivera, who says the organization is currently targeting 7 10 players with the top pick.
As for WR Steve Smith, who struggled in correlation with Clausen's difficulties adapting to the league, Rivera wasn't providing any clues as to whether one of the team's few veterans will be moved while repeating the mandate of his new job.
